The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) becomes law in May 2018. It will be implemented into UK law by a new Data Protection Act 2018. GDPR significantly alters the laws regarding how businesses collect, store, process and disclose personal data. GDPR also introduces significant fines of up to 4% of global revenue for non-compliant businesses.
An entire industry has developed around the technical implementation of GDPR. Yet, GDPR is one aspect only of compliance with the privacy regime. Of equal importance are the Privacy in Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) which deal in the main with email marketing, and the ePrivacy Directive which deals with cookies and a number of other issues. Each business must be compliant with each piece of regulation and not just with GDPR.
Buckworths Compliance is the sister company of Buckworths (www.buckworths.com) the only law firm working exclusively with startups and high growth businesses. We bring together specialists in compliance, legal experts and tech geeks to provide a one stop shop for compliance with privacy laws.
Many of our competitors are only able to advise on one aspect of compliance, leaving businesses to work with third party advisors on other aspects. This risks important issues falling between the gaps.
